Dassault Systèmes partners with Stratasys for design optimisation of 3D printed parts

The new partnership aims to aid design optimisation for FDM parts with better simulation software

Fresh off the back of launching its new F123 3D printer range at SolidWorks World, Stratasys and Dassault Systèmes have partnered to provide the next generation of design tools for optimised structures and parts.

Jon Stevenson, Stratasys senior VP global software noted that both companies shared a vision for a fully integrated, end-to-end design to additive manufacturing solution, with high performance simulation the next step towards accurately representing the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process.

“We believe the solution’s predictive capabilities and efficient workflow will significantly expand the range of parts that can be confidently produced with Stratasys FDM-based 3D printing solutions. These are already being used to create production parts by companies like United Launch Alliance, Opel, Volvo Trucks and Daihatsu.”

One of the biggest challenges is design optimisation for lighter weight parts – with both Stratasys and Dassault noting that FDM 3D printing is able to use less material than traditional manufacturing technology to achieve the same performance.

“For additive manufacturing to reach its true potential, engineers need tools that will allow them to harness the virtually limitless geometric freedom that it provides,” said Dassault Simulia CEO Scott Berkey.

“By fully simulating the unique characteristics of the FDM process, we’re able to bring unprecedented accuracy and speed to the design and validation process.”

A long-time member of the SolidWorks Partner Program, Stratasys is also announcing a GrabCAD Print Add In for SolidWorks, enabling users to estimate and print parts without leaving the SolidWorks program.
